10.3.1 Dancer's behaviour

Some common variables used to estimate the internal state or motivation of the active forager are:

  • The occurrence and duration of dances performed after returning to the hive.
  • The latency of the first reversal or waggle run, i.e., the time the bee spends from its arrival to the hive until it begins to dance.
  • The number of runs per unit time (e.g. Waddington, 1982; Seeley, 1986; Farina, 1996; De Marco and Farina, 2001).
