11.1. Recording initial flight path

To perform this kind of experiment:

1. Train foragers to an artificial feeder.

2. Catch them at one of the four foraging motivations (outbound at the hive, inbound out the hive, arrival at the feeder, departure from the feeder)

3. Transport the bees to a remote release site.

4. Release the bees.

When the bee is released, it usually performs a few circling flights and then vanishes along an often rather straight flight in a particular direction.

5. Note their flight directions.

For this a compass and a map can be used.
