12.5.1. Transponder identification

Before mounting the transponders on bees at the start of an experiment, all transponder-IDs to be used have to be identified using a USB-Reader-Pen (iID® PEN mini USB + software, microsensys, Erfurt, Germany) and stored in a text-file. This allows an overview of all tags present in the experiment and their comparison with the tag IDs detected by the scanner. The scanner data can be read out with software supplied by microsensys GmbH and are stored as a text-file. The next step is to import this file into a statistic program datasheet e.g. SPSS Statistics (SPSS Inc.; Chicago, Illinois, USA), differentiating the four variables: transponder-ID, date, time, scanner ID, and antenna. From here the processing of the data starts using self-programmed algorithms (Syntax-files).
