7.8. Feeding tests using caged adult workers in the laboratory
Some investigations (e.g. nutrition, toxicology, virology and nosema studies) require that workers receive experimental treatments orally. Typically, the test substance is mixed with food, such as 50% (weight/volume) sucrose solution (section 18.104.22.168). For workers, typical quantities of sucrose solution consumed in nature in a short interval is 50 µl (Seeley, 1994), whereas the honey stomach of drones usually can contain approximately 30 µl (Hoffmann, 1966).
