3.1.4.2.1. Feeding adult SHBs with coloured food

  1. Dissolve the dye (Rhodamine B, green and blue food colouring; S Spiewok, unpublished data) in sugar water (40%).
  2. Allow recently emerged, unfed SHB adults to feed for 3 days ad libitum.

Note: After two weeks in field colonies, SHBs fed with green and blue food colouring were distinguishable from other SHBs, but both colours came out turquois (S. Spiewok, unpublished data). Rose Bengal, fed to bees, was used successfully to identify the feeding interactions between SHBs and honey bees (Ellis et al., 2002c) but resulted in high mortality when fed to SHBs directly (S Spiewok, unpublished data).
