The honey bee (Apis mellifera) is generally regarded as the most important insect to humans due to their pollination service, hive products and as a research model. The honey bees Apis mellifera and A. cerana are important economic insects, not only for honey production, but also for crop pollination. More than 35% of the human diet are considered to benefit from pollination, and 52% of the 115 leading global food commodities depend on honeybee pollination.
