DESCRIPTION
The COLOSS Varroa control and RNSBB Task Forces are joining forces and organising a field training school to demonstrate traditional and innovative methods for varroa monitoring, colony evaluation, and measurement of resilience traits for sustainable breeding.
The training school will be held in Bilbao, March 14th, following the Varroa control and RNSBB task force workshops (12th and 13th March, 2024).
The ultimate aim of the training school is to disseminate standard methods to support breeding and monitoring programs among honey bee experts worldwide.
Field demonstrations will focus on the following aspects:
Varroa monitoring
- Adult bee sample infestation
- Drone brood infestation
- Bottom board check
Breeding for resistance traits
- Colony strength (Liebefeld / Col Eval)
- Hygienic behaviour (pin test)
Sustainable management
- Brood interruption via queen caging
Several demonstration stations will be set up to function in parallel and allow each participant to have a hands-on experience. Theoretical sessions will also be held at the beginning and end of the day.
REGISTRATION
The training school is open to all COLOSS members. Limited places available (55).
Preference will be given to actively participating members of the Varroa control and RNSBB task forces.
Participants should bring their own protective bee veil, suits and gloves. Coffee break and lunch will need to be covered by participants (~20-25EUR).

Travel info
Bilbao is best reached by plane. Bilbao International Airport is conveniently located 12 km from the city center (https://www.aena.es/en/bilbao.html, www.bilbaoair.info ). There is a direct Busline (A3247, every 15min) to the city center with stops in Gran Vía, Plaza Moyua, Alameda Recalde and Bilbao Intermodal. Taxi from Airport to City Center costs around ~35eur.
The workshop will take place at the University building in the city center: Bizkaia Aretoa, (Avenida Abandoibarra, 3, 48009 Bilbao). Bilbao center is a walker friendly city, and workshop venue and suggested hotels are easily reached by walking along the river Nervión.
