DATE/TIME:
Day 1: Monday, March 24
Day 2: Tuesday, March 25
DESCRIPTION:
Confirmed speaker: Nick Rosenberger, University of Freiburg
How does climate change impact bee health? What modifications can beekeepers easily adopt in their apiaries to help their colonies thrive with climate change? What adaptations have proven effective in southern countries? How will the parasite pressure change as true winters fall away and colonies no longer have natural brood breaks?
We will discuss these issues at the Climate Change Workshop on March 24th-25th, prior to the AG Bienentagung in Freiburg, Germany. The program details are still being finalized. We’re excited that Nick Rosenberger, a postdoc in the lab of Alexandra Maria Klein, whose research focuses on the impacts of climate change on pollinator health, will provide a talk. We plan to kick off the event at 11:30 am on March 24th and end for lunch on March 25th. We hope you can join us.
We will make the two main speaker lectures hybrid, so that they can be widely attended. But we have decided that the actual workshop will be in-person only, as it will require active participation and discussion groups. Our goal is to design a standardized experiment that could be conducted by numerous COLOSS members along a climate gradient to look at simple temperature mitigation strategies and their impacts on varroa populations and disease incidence. We will also strategize and outline a review paper. We look forward to seeing you in Freiburg, a vibrant university city in southwest Germany’s Black Forest.
There will be no reimbursement for travel or accommodation. We have a small budget for the coffee breaks, which we believe will cover the expected costs. If we have more than 20 people attend, we reserve the right to add a small registration fee (15 to 25 € per person) to offset expenses. Individuals will be responsible for their own lunch and dinner expenses.
We invite people to arrive as of 11:30 am on Monday, March 24th. We will start with small discussion groups then enjoy lunch together. The first invited speaker will start at 14:00. The meeting will end on Tuesday, March 25th at lunch time, so that participants can attend the AG Bienentagung.
