Mrs van Gent studied at the University of Applied Sciences department Biotechnology in Oss The Netherlands. She began her carrier as assistant of Laboratory of Monoclonal Antibodies where she was involved in serological detection of Nematodes.
In 1995 she was employed at the Research Institute for Plant protection (IPO-DLO) where she worked on detection of fungi in soil, water and plant material that includes DNA extraction, (Nested)-PCR, PCR-ELISA, real-time PCR using TaqMan and Molecular Beacon.
From 2001 she worked at Wageningen Plant Research on identification and detection of plant pathogens in plant material, soil, water and air.

She has 30 years of experience in Molecular Biology: DNA and/or RNA extraction from nematodes, (biotrophic) fungus, bacteria, viruses, bees and rats. Manual and high throughput DNA/RNA isolation from different substrates, simple extraction protocol.  RAPD, conventional PCR, nested PCR, PCR-ELISA, SPITS-PCR, IGS-PCR, ISSR, agarose gel electrophoresis, Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis, Whole Genome Amplification. Primer & probe design, real-time PCR (Sybr green, molecular beacon, TaqMan Probe), Quantitative-PCR, SNP detection, Genotyping, Reverse Transcriptase Q-PCR, Duplex Q-PCR, Quadruple real-time PCR, Dye chemistry and digital PCR. Sanger sequencing, Next Generation Sequencing analysis.

Organiser Q-PCR workshop for internal and external training.

Project leader:  2018 Advantages of Crystal Digital PCR, 2019 Beetles dumping DNA, 2020 Swab the Bee Hive.
