Master’s Study: Viral infections in honey bee queens and evaluate viral resistant trait in U.S. queen breeding operations, Mississippi State University, USA

The Center for Pollinator Health at the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, MS, is seeking a motivated and diligent master’s student to join the lab by January 2024. The successful candidate will engage in a blend of field and laboratory experiments, utilizing cutting-edge molecular tools, to investigate viral infections in honey bee queens and evaluate viral resistant trait in U.S. queen breeding operations.

The selected student will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with scientists at the USDA-ARS Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics, and Physiology Laboratory in Baton Rouge, LA, as well as professional queen breeders across the states of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.

The student will be responsible for executing experiments, raising queens, overseeing experimental colonies, ensuring proper sample collection, and conducting molecular analysis in the laboratory. Additionally, the student will be expected to draft manuscripts detailing the research findings and to present the results at scientific conferences and beekeeping meetings.
