For the sake of the longevity of the European honey bee species (Apis mellifera), honey bees need to be given the opportunity to evolve on their own, ideally without human intervention, to find their own solutions to the challenges they face as they have done so for millions of years. We identify and monitor honey bee colonies living in natural and human-made cavities; they are referred to as free-living bees.
