VAROLIS was founded in 2023 to develop and bring lithium-based veterinary medicines for honey bees to market, building on the discovery of lithium’s activity against Varroa destructor made in collaboration with the University of Hohenheim and the Institute for Bee Research in Veitshöchheim. Our lead product, LIMITEX, is a systemic lithium citrate treatment designed for reliable efficacy, simple administration via feeding and a favourable residue profile. Our goal is to provide beekeepers with an effective and practical new tool to protect honey bee health.

The founder of Varolis, Dr. Stefan Hannus, is a biochemist, researcher and entrepreneur with a background in drug discovery and biotechnology. He initiated the research that led to the discovery of lithium as an active substance against Varroa mites and has since been involved in its scientific and pharmaceutical development.
